Dental Hygiene in the Community: The Dental Mission Project Society

Updated: May 25, 2020

I had the opportunity to volunteer with The Dental Mission Project Society, which is a non-profit organization that provides free oral health care services to marginalized populations (see the link below). I participated in a one day clinic that was held at the Ray-Cam Co-Operative Community Centre in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside where we provided free dental and dental hygiene services to people of low income. It was disheartening to see the progression of disease and state of oral health that these individuals presented with, but it was rewarding to see how happy and grateful each person was afterward. I definitely see the lure of working in community dentistry because of this alone. I would like to continue to volunteer in the community to help increase access to care for those who cannot afford private services.
